New York has perhaps inspired more songs, tv shows and movies than any other city in the world. It’s a city of daring, where astonishing luxury lies alongside a bold and unapologetic street culture. Whilst I’m forever loyal to my home city of Miami, I can’t deny that I love spending time in New York. It’s one of the best cities in the US to go all out and treat yourself, so I’ve put together a list of the best things for luxury travelers to do in New York City. We all know the classics, like visiting Times Square and venturing up the Empire State Building, so I’ve focused on more unique experiences that I just know my fellow luxury jet setters will love.

Bergdorf Goodman isn’t just a store; it’s a New York cultural icon. The Fifth Avenue store gained landmark status in 2016, underscoring its role in the cultural fabric of the city. Since 1899, Bergdorf’s has attracted an elite clientele with its first-class selection of luxury goods from the world’s most glamorous designer brands. Therefore, a visit to Bergdorf Goodman ranks very highly on my list of the best luxury experiences to be had in New York. I mean, if it’s good enough for Beyonce…
Life doesn’t get more luxurious than soaring over Manhattan in a helicopter with a glass of champagne in your hand – not in my book, anyway. There are plenty of tours to choose from, including a super romantic couples’ flight which is perfect if you’re spending your honeymoon in New York.
You’ll never forget your first Broadway musical. Or your second. Or your third. There’s something spectacular about seeing a Broadway show. I’m the kind of person who skips through the songs in movie musicals but live shows offer a totally different – and altogether more thrilling – experience. Front mezzanine seats are generally considered to be the best in house and the box seats aren’t as desirable as they used to be because your view of the stage is partially obstructed.
There’s nothing better than sipping cocktails as you sail along the Hudson river on a summer’s evening. You can get dressed up, enjoy exquisite fine dining and soak in panoramic views of the New York skyline at sunset; it truly is an unforgettable way to spend an evening. Bateaux, New York City Lights and Hudson’s at Pier 81 are some of the best companies to go with.
The Legend Suite at the Yankee Stadium is baseball gone first class. It’s the five-star way to enjoy a New York baseball game. It comprises the first five rows in the stadium so you’ll have an up-close view of all the action. In addition, you’ll get access to four exclusive Legends’ restaurants where everything except alcohol is unlimited and you’re likely to spot a handful of celebrities enjoying pre game food and drink.
I love New York but it runs at breakneck speed and sometimes you need to take a moment to relax… and where better to do that than one of the city’s most luxurious and indulgent spas? The Sisley-Paris spa is part of the Carlyle on the Upper East Side, so even its postcode is upscale. They offer an extensive range of face and body therapies that use “phyto-cosmetology”; that is, high-quality, plant-based skin care. You’ll emerge feeling brand new and ready to embrace the city’s chaos once more.
There’s an irresistible romance about the Plaza. Perhaps it’s down to its opulent decor, legendary status or the simple fact that it’s been featured in so many classic movies (from The Way We Were to The Great Gatsby). Whatever the reason, you shouldn’t miss the chance to marvel at this gorgeous Manhattan symbol of high society. And what better way to enjoy the timeless elegance of the Plaza Hotel than with a spot of afternoon tea at the Palm Court?
If you’ve been paying attention, you might remember that I named this my all-time favorite afternoon tea, and with good reason. With its marble pillars, domed roof and majestic chandeliers, it really takes you back to the Gilded Age of New York City.
The Plaza is right near Bergdorf Goodman, so you can refuel here after a lengthy shopping trip. I recommend booking your tea in advance because this is an extremely popular luxury experience. There’s a smart casual dress code with an emphasis on the smart. Ditch the jeans and sneakers and get dressed up! You’re on a luxury trip to New York – if you can’t crack out your fanciest attire now, then when can you?
The restaurant, not the time – although there’s never really a wrong hour to eat in New York. There are so many incredible fine dining options in New York City, but that’s another post for another time. I had to mention Eleven in Madison Park because it really does stand out as one of Manhattan’s most exclusive restaurants. It boasts three Michelin stars and in 2017 it was named the World’s Best Restaurant. If that doesn’t convince you to dine there, well, then, I don’t know what will.
And there we have it – my selection of the best things for luxury travelers to do in New York City. For more on US travel, why not check out my list of the best American cities for a staycation?
